And so to Woodsend Playing Fields in Flixton for a Lancashire and Cheshire League Division A clash between AFC Urmston Meadowside and Cheadle & Gatley FC.
AFC Urmston Meadowside was established in 1977 by John Rushton and Geoff Whitehead with one team. The Meds now have 81 teams comprising various girls', ladies', boys' and men's sides.
The men's first team are playing their inaugural season in the LACL Division A, after years of local league football. It hasn't started well with two crushing defeats to begin with - 8-2 at AFC Salford and 9-0 at Signol Athletic - and then two narrow home losses 2-1 to Rushford Park Reserves and 4-3 to Newton Vikings... But that's before the Meds' first point after a 3-3 draw at Prestwich Marauders last weekend 😀
Cheadle & Gatley JFC joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League this season after being crowned as Cheshire FA Club of The Year in 2024.
The club was formed in 1977 for junior footballers and the new Saturday team has commenced their first season in the LACL Division A with home victories over Silver Birch (7-2) and AFC Stockport Titans (6-4) at Manor Farm in Timperley, followed by a 6-0 away destruction of Village 2nds....
Numberplates today are PH16LOO (Peter Higson Plumbing again !), WH05 DAT and MU51CKS. And a bonus - a BJS removal van 'A Clean Pair of Heels In Northampton'.
A squally, blustery day and it's beyond House of Biryianis and Kebabs, then Frurt before Manor Academy 'Succeeding Together' and Mersey Farm. Onwards, via three sets of roadworks, to Flixton, wherein is Feng Sheng and The Furry Godmother... dog grooming since you ask 🤔
Then into Woodsend Circle and the council Playing Fields. A tidy residential area hosts local shops on two arcs of the radius and The Fox pub.
Urmston would have been in orange and black, and Cheadle & Gatley in blue with yellow and white trim.
Would being the operative word as there is no sign of activity - the game belatedly announced as postponed,
presumably due to Storm Amy.
The pitches look playable so maybe there is some Trafford Council involvement 🤔
So I hot foot it back, again via the roadworks, to a County Cup tie at the BTH.
I just make kick off for Altrincham Hale against Poynton.
A feisty affair sees Poynton triumph 4-2 in a game of 6 bookings, a sinbinning, an exquisite back heel onto
the post, two head injuries and 8 minutes of stoppage time 😝
The overall day is absolute nonsense 😳
